Book translation project
Dear Friends,
I would like to let you know about the project of translating a book from Yiddish into Polish. Thanks to it, the residents of Sokołów will be able to fully learn - previously unknown - the history of the Jewish community in Sokołów. We will post the entire translation for free on the Internet so that everyone can read it.

Do tej pory przetłumaczyliśmy trzy książki z jidysz na polski. Były to: "Sokołów - moje zniszczone miasteczko" Pereca Granatsztejna, "W cieniu Treblinki" oraz "Dzień w Treblince" Simchy Poliakewicza. Wszystkie znajdują się za darmo na stronie sokolow.jewish.pl.

Upamiętnienie ofiar likwidacji getta
22 września 1942 r. Niemcy rozpoczęli likwidację getta w Sokołowie Podlaskim. Ponad połowa mieszkańców miasta - Żydzi, którzy przez pokolenia przyczyniali się do rozwoju Sokołowa - została wywieziona do Treblinki. Upamiętniliśmy tę tragiczną rocznicę, odczytując fragment książki Simchy Poliakewicza "Dzień w Treblince". Fragment swojego opowiadania "Droga do Treblinki", inspirowanego prawdziwymi wydarzeniami, przeczytała nauczycielka SP1, Wiesława Kwiek. Psalm 23 odczytał nauczyciel SP3, Jacek Odziemczyk.

"One day at Treblinka"
The Gszarim Foundation has translated from Yiddish into Polish and published another Book of Remembrance. "One day at Treblinka" by Simche Poliakewicz is the third book on the history of the Jewish community of Sokołów Podlaski, translated by our organization with the support of the Association of the Jewish Historical Institute of Poland and private donors.
Two years ago, we prepared a translation of Perec Granatsztejn's book "Sokołów - my destroyed town", presenting memories of a bustling town in the interwar period.
Last year - "In the Shadow of Treblinka" by Simcha Poliakewicz - a book describing the time of the German occupation.
The author of "One day at Treblinka" was born in Sterdyń. During the war he was in Sokołów, from where he was sent to the Treblinka camp. He managed to escape from there and - thanks to the help of one of the local families - produced false documents with which he went to Warsaw. In his memoirs published in 1948, he describes the war reality of a small town located in the vicinity of a deadly camp machine. He speaks directly about the dangers that were lurking for Jews not only by Germans but also by Poles. He portrays both peasants who searched the property left by Jews and the family who took him under their roof. It highlights the diversity of attitudes, which only makes his testimony more authentic.
The author of the translation is Dr. Agata Reibach. The texts of all books are available at www.sokolow.jewish.pl and can be used by the town's residents, who until now, due to the language barrier, could not get to know this part of our common history.

Only by discovering this history, which should become a permanent element of school education, can we bring about an open and tolerant society,” says Dr. Agata Reibach.
The Foundation is currently starting a project which will see the 750-page Memorial Book of Sokolow Podlaski translated into Polish. The chapters of Sokolow Memorial Book were written by many different authors And the project will take several years. The whole cost of it is 45,000 PLN. The foundation will apply for funding, but initially funds are needed for so-called own contribution. Hence the idea of conducting an online fundraising.
“This project is the fulfillment of my many years of my dreams. I wanted Sokołów to learn its history through the accounts of direct participants of the Jewish fate of this town. After all, Jewish citizens formed more than half of the pre-war inhabitants of the city, and today there are almost no traces of their life left. Our publications seek to restore the Jewish presence on the pages of local history, strengthen the awareness of the inhabitants and show that we still have to learn a lot about the past,” says Katarzyna Markusz, president of the board of the Gszarim Foundation.
“Jewish memorial books - several of which have already been published in Polish - are extraordinary documents that allow us to look at the history of Poland, the history of our cities and towns, and the history of relations between Jews and Poles from the perspective which to the Polish reader is today practically unknown. As time passes, due to the passing away of the generation of witnesses to the Holocaust, such testimonies are particularly valuable and irreplaceable,” says prof. Jan Grabowski, chairman of the Gszarim Foundation Council.

It is a fragment of a short story by Moyshe Olgin, a writer associated with the Bund. He wrote his articles and books in English, Russian, German, French, Polish, Hebrew and Yiddish.

Konkurs historyczny dla uczniów
Fundacja Gszarim ogłasza konkurs historyczny dla uczniów szkół z Sokołowa Podlaskiego i okolic. Nagrodzone zostaną najciekawsze oryginalne prace dotyczące historii społeczności żydowskiej. Zgłoszenia można przesyłać do 1 września 2019 r.
Co trzeba zrobić?
Trzeba napisać esej, opowiadanie lub artykuł mówiący o historii Żydów z Sokołowa Podlaskiego lub okolic – Węgrowa, Siedlec lub innych miejscowości w pobliżu.
